JALANDHAR: It seems to be all in the family as Paramvir Kaur Sangha (22) has become the first Punjabi woman in the USA to wrest the position of Deputy Sheriff of Bakersfield in the USA where, her uncle Tarlochan Sohal was already a Sheriff and her brother Harnek a Jail Superintendent in Calfornia state of the USA.

Meanwhile, the news of Paramvir's elevation has led to celebrations at her native village Kala Sanghian near here where, residents distributed laddoos to each other when they saw Paramvir swearing in as a Deputy Sheriff on a news channel. " Paramvir and her family has enthused us by their achievements and that too in a distant country like the USA. They have dispelled usual perceptions that Punjabis were doing odd jobs over there," said a jubiliant Surinder Singh, a resident of Kala Sanghian.

After doing her schooling from California, Paramvir Sangha went to the University of California in Bakersfield for her higher education and it was from there that she was selected as the Deputy Sheriff of Bakersfield. Though, she was born in California she, was brought up by her parents and uncle Tarlochan Sohal in India for some time before she again proceeded to the USA for doing her schools over there. Paramvir Sangha took oath as Bakersfield's Deputy Sheriff on Saturday. The event filled the air with zeal particularly, for the Punjabi community of the USA.

"It is a big event for one and all, especially, Punjabis living in California and other states. We are going to celebrate it in a big
way. She has really done us proud. It has given more honour to me as she has followed my footsteps," said Tarlochan Sohal, the Sheriff of  Merced County and who, is an uncle (Mama) of Paramvir over telephone. Tarlochan Sohal belonged to village Athola on the Jalandhar-Kapurthala road.

Paramvir said her father Gurdev Sangha, brother Harnek and uncle Tarlochan shaped up her career and encouraged her to become a police officer. "It always remained to be a dream to be a police officer. Now it has come true," said Paramvir Sangha.
